Merman Bowie
Edit by allthenobodyppl: There is a story where a merman would swim to the shore in the middle of the night to sing. When a woman living near the beach hears his voice, she is drawn to follow. She’d almost be in a trance as she searches for the source of the singing. Eventually, she finds the merman sitting on the sand. He can shape shift during the night to take on the form of a human. When she nears, he would pull her down and seduce her by the water. In the morning, she would wake up on the beach, disoriented, and can only remember bits and pieces of what happened the night before.
The rest of the story takes a turn for the worse, so if you want to stop reading and keep the happy ending, you should do so now lol.
The merman keeps swimming to the shore each night to sing, and the woman would always be drawn to him. After a few more liaisons she would be able to remember more and more of each meeting. Thing is, when she hears his song, she is forced to follow. In the beginning, his voice controlled both her body and mind, like she is hypnotized to go to him. After a few meetings, she gains control of her mind, and becomes terrified of him because he’s still able to call her to him. “How is he doing this? Why can’t I refuse him? Why can’t I walk away?” she would wonder to herself.
One evening, she slips a pocket knife into her jeans before he swims to shore. When he calls for her again, she can feel her feet move of their own accord, following his voice. Reaching his side, she trembles profusely in her attempt to move away from him. He smiles at her from his sitting position on the ground and tugs on her hand. When she doesn’t allow herself to be pulled underneath him, he frowns. He tugs again, a little harder, but she still doesn’t budge. She starts shaking her head “no” and his frown deepens – she’s beginning to reject his influence over her.
He narrows his eyes and forcibly yanks her down to him. He crawls on top of her and begins removing her blouse. The waves from the ocean sweeps over them and her knife gets wash out of her pocket. It slides a few inches away from her hand. Her fingers twitches, trying to reach for the weapon, as he throws her wet shirt to the side and unbuttons her jeans. Another wave flows over them and the knife gets pushed into her hand. She grabs hold of it and swipes the blade towards him, aiming for his neck. He shifts and she ends up stabbing him in the shoulder.
He cries out and immediately rolls away from her. She sits up and kicks her feet on the floor, pushing herself away from him. He stands, hunched over, nursing the wound she inflicted. He looks at her, his eyes are filled with betrayal. He slowly backs away from her into the ocean. With one last look of hurt in his gaze, he turns and dives into the water.
She stares after him for a few seconds before she quickly gets on her feet and gather her clothes; then she runs home. The next night, she has a few more knives in her possession, terrified of what he’ll do if he calls for her again – no doubt he will be angry. However, he never did call for her. She eventually nods off on the couch.
When day breaks, she wakes up with a stiff neck because of the way she fell asleep on the couch. Glad he didn’t show the night before, she stretches and decides to take a jog along the beach; to loosen the stiff muscles. She opens her front door and freezes. There, lying on the floor, is the knife she used on the merman. It has been meticulously cleaned and laid carefully on top of a large seashell. She never did see him again.
